'It was a challenging year": Glo After celebrating title, GWBA looks to grow league. Credit: Jordan Jacobson
Oshkosh Northwestern
OSHKOSH – Two seasons, two championships for the Wisconsin Glo.
Wisconsin won its second consecutive Global Women’s Basketball Association championship after defeating St. Louis 93-77 at Fontbonne University on Sunday.
“I’m extremely proud of our franchise and happy for everyone involved with the Glo,” said Wisconsin general manager Brad Fischer, who is also the head coach of the UW-Oshkosh women’s basketball team. “Our owner, Greg Pierce, got this off the ground and has made a substantial investment in women’s basketball. So I’m very happy for him that he has another title and can hang another championship banner at the Oshkosh arena.
“The difficult part about being the general manager is, once the games start, everything is out of your hands. You just have to sit back and trust that you have the right people in the right spots. I truly believed when our team was at or near full strength, we’d be very tough to beat. We had a large target on our backs this year, so to see it end with a title is extremely rewarding.”
Since 2006, the Sky have fought to gain a foothold in the hearts and minds of Chicago basketball fans, largely to no avail. On Tuesday, Chicago celebrated its first professional basketball championship since 1998, marking a huge leap for the franchise and for women’s sports in the city.

Silver anniversaries deserve sterling silver hardware and the Sky understood that assignment.
In the WNBA’s 25th anniversary season, the Sky made a playoff push that had them knocking on their first WNBA Finals door since 2014. They busted that door down, winning the franchise’s first-ever title on Sunday.
The celebration Tuesday fit the historic moment.
When the team met the thousands of fans who awaited them at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion after a championship parade up Michigan Avenue, Sky coach/general manager James Wade had a message.
“Remember the seat you’re sitting in,” Wade said standing at center stage. “We’re gonna make sure you’re sitting in the same one next year.”
Courtney Vandersloot walked into Wintrust Arena Tuesday morning wearing black sunglasses and a boot on her left foot. The sunglasses were maybe a style choice or maybe part of a hangover cure. The boot she wore as a precaution for her plantar fascia.
She looked tired but joyful from celebrating the Sky’s first-ever WNBA Championship clinching win over the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday evening.
Candace Parker walked in side-by-side with her daughter, Lailaa, and WNBA Finals MVP Kahleah Copper was right behind them.
